As the opening exhibition of the 2012 season, Primary PROJECTS presents Jessy Nite’s ﬁrst Miami-based solo exhibition ‘Bad As I Wanna Be’, an outspoken series of multimedia works evoking the spirit of rebellion, determination, success, luxury and gender identity from a pointedly feminine perspective.
Wielding brash conﬁdence and overt sexuality as her metaphoric weaponry, Nite’s practice follows a lineage of groundbreaking female artists who have relayed their personal experiences within patriarchal paradigms (both within and outside the realm of contemporary art-making) loudly and not without explicit, often scandalous terminology. Nite relays her observations through a gritty, street-inspired lens revealing the aspirations and inherent limitations of the drive to win and win big. Holding fast to the live fast, die young’ spirit of pink rock and clandestine urban culture, Nite’s typographic work and multimedia installations are made for those who throw caution to the wind and fearlessly, publicly ﬂaunt their creative (sometimes self-destructive) powers. Phrases and words reﬂecting Nite’s own brash, shameless conﬁdence and street-wise swagger act as both a draw and defense: they are warning signs to those who fail to meet Nite’s own ruthless work ethic, but also a battle cry for all those who measure up.
A highlight of Nite’s proliﬁc series of sculptures, print works and installations include a series of words, associated with Nite’s brash aesthetic: Paid (spelled out with hot pink jewels), Waster (pushing out of the wall in mirrored splinters) and Disappear Here (threaded through with boldly colored string). The exhibition’s centerpiece will feature a full-size bed, where visitors are invited to lie down and see the words ‘Bad As I Wanna Be’ hover over them in wild cursive letters. Jessy Nite is a multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer who has studied shoe design at the Fashion Institute in New York and Art Direction at the Miami Ad School. Ohhhhh yeahhhhhh...its that time of year again! Grab ur comfiest hotbitch shoes, any gear with gold woven into it, and the closest attractive billionaire cause Art Basel is right around the corner! Ah yes....Basel...a great time to be a Miamian cause you don't even have to leave town to see your favorite friends, artists, musicians and more from all over the globe...they just show right up at your door.

This year, I have a piece hanging at Primary Projects, and I am in excellent company...check out that lineup!!! We are showing in the back room (don't let that fool you though...no handjobs or lapdances...Basel is classy, people) and the main gallery is a whole other show to BLOW UR MIND...wide open!!! Man its all so dope..I wish I could share the secrets, but you will just have to come in person to see wassssup.

Also, I am so excited to say that I will have a piece hanging in the Margulies Warehouse as well!!! Very very cool. That place is like a magical treasure trove of art wonder so DEFINITELY check that out while wandering the streets of Wynwood...its so special! I can't believe I get to have my werk there.

After three full days of family fun, we finished our pieces and they were auctioned off by Sotheby's...I am almost positive that by the end of the auction, the Margulies Fam bought the whole PF set, which is super rad! When the boys at Primary Projects told me about their September show and showed me the lineup of work for His WIFE & Her LOVER, I knew I wanted INNNN! They said they had nothing for the cranny room (the TINY sliver of a room inside the gallery), so I was down to try and come up with something for the space.

HELL HERE was a one night only "occurance" during the opening of the show. I like to think of it as an experiencial installation. I wanted to create something interactive that was all about the first person perspective and allowed for each person to have their own encounter with the piece. I wanted to recreate a moment experienced when youre coming to the end of a long bender...that moment when you find yourself coming in and out, still loving the drug, but suddenly becoming aware of the situation surrounding you...its usually a confusing, fucked up, anxious feeling.

To confuse and disorient the user, the ceiling, walls and floor were all blacked out and a lighting installation set it off in red. I teamed up with Miami local Djs NotForTheRadio to create a soundtrack for the space that would be played super loud in headphones while inside the room to help drive home the idea of disorientation and isolation.

And of course, the cherry on top of it all was that you pay $20 to enter the room (no peeking, either! you had to go al or nothing!) and were greeted by a dancer who sat you down in a chair positioned perfectly in the space to get the full effect, and went to town giving some of the craziest lapdances I have ever heard about!!!

Needless to say, it was fucking crazy! Such a fun piece and something I never thought I would ever do, but fuuuuck I am so glad I did. I have always wanted to create interactive work for the gallery and this was my first attempt at it. I really hope to do more because the payoff of seeing everyone come out sweaty, red, and "needing a cigarette" (can't tell you how many people said that), was the most rewarding reaction I have ever had to my work. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated...

WOOOOOW!!! For those of you who came out to the opening of His WIFE & Her LOVER this weekend, thank youuuuuu!!! I am so proud of the Primary Flight crew for putting together a truly incredible show...I am grateful to had even been a part of it!

My installation was for one night only, but ohhhh what a nite it was...DEF one for the books! I cannot WAAAIIIIIT to post the pics when I get them back from the photographers...man...Im like, sweaty just thinking about it haha. All of the werk was really sick and major maaaajor props to all of the other artists.

Much like the cause and effects commonly associated with the love affair, Primary Projects has conceptualized a group show as a call-and-response to destruction, secrecy, violence, social class, pride and desire.

The opening reception of His WIFE & Her LOVER is slated for Saturday, September 10 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Primary Projects (4141 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 104, Miami Design District) and is free and open to the public; complimentary beverages are provided by 42 Below and Perrier. Valerie Hegarty embodies the soul of His WIFE & Her LOVER in her works. The joy of her approach lies in destruction rather than its creation. Centering her practice on the politics of the American myth, Hegarty’s canvases and sculptures replicate emblems of frontier ethos – colonial furniture, antique dishware, heroic paintings of landscapes and national figures – only to demolish them by devices associated with their historical significance.

Los Angeles-based Cleon Peterson introduces a world in which contrasting schemes of morality result in eruptive hostility between social classes. Common in Peterson’s work, he depicts upheavals that embody the inner workings of the individual and mechanics of society. It’s up to the viewer to take sides and feel sympathy, indignation or catharsis.

Respond, destroy, create, destroy: a cycle that can be viewed as a simplified narrative of Edouard Nardon’s work entitled “Only the Strong.” Nardon fabricates twenty authentic jailhouse “shivs” with objects assembled from common prison materials. Nardon then breaks these objects and reassembles them with the sole purpose to destroy again.

These brief examples provide a window into the overall mood and complexities romantically displayed in His WIFE & Her LOVER, an ominously bright exhibit.

Early this year, I began working on projects with the boys over at Primary Flight for their new space Primary Projects. We have a super dope jewelry project coming out this November and I am like, beyond siked to show everyone this special edition version made for the hottest bishhhh, Nicki Minaj!!!

"Thriller" is a large brooch and the "All Thriller No Filler" necklace sits on the collarbone like a nice scripty tattoo. Each piece is made of layered and hand painted plexi, fabricated by Private Cotton and assembled by me. Annnd the matte pink/black gloss colorway is exclusive for these pieces only :)

Wasssssup people...been out for a hot minute and thats because I actually took a mother fucking VACATIONNNNN!!! Like, a for real one, where you get on a plane, and go far away and do awesome shit...like nothing. NOTHING!!! I didn't do anything the whole time I was gone and it was soooo dooope! I feel like 8 million dollars...cash....in 20s and 100s.

But now I'm back just in time to start finally rolling out some of the projects that lead to that oh-so-needed vacay. Mannnn I've been dying to share some of them and I am gonna explode if I have to wait much longer....

oh mennnnng I am so siked to get to do yet ANOTHER gig poster with the dopesssssst printers around, Iron Forge Press. This time around, the band is PRIMUS!!! SO COOOOL!!!

I have been trying to keep the Fillmore/S FL gig posters looking tropical, but still keep them band appropriate, which was extra hard for primus haha...but then after watching a bunch of their old vids I remembered how seriously silly they could be. Then I thought about my seriously burning love for cheesey tropical ish. (Anyone who knows me, knows that my fav department store is the tropical wear section of Walgreens...fo rillll!) Sooooo...I just mixed em together with some vintage postcard appeal and blammmo!!! The end product turned out pretty silly. I can't wait to see it printed and be able to share it, but here are some closeups til then :)

They had all of the artists submit vectors of our work, and through stencils and cutouts, they are going to do one MASSIVE install with all of the art together. It is based off of Peruvian Chica Poster art and it is gong to be so fucking DOOOOOOOOPE!!! None of the artists have any idea what it will look like, so I am extra excited to check the opening. Is valentine's day like Thanksgiving....do we have to say what we love? Well, I love my fwends, and family, annnnnnd apparently boys who dont love me back hahaha. But its cool...I don't need a valentine to catch a wicked case of VD!

During my warm and fuzzy period, aka the Friends & Lovers months, I grew tired of the love propaganda. I saved my big showcase spot for the VERY end and, when I thought I might puke from all of the love I was painting, I thought there is nothing left to paint but lovey-puke. So, for Valentine's Day, I repost Love Sick.

FADER X FIAT X EXHIBITALIA: the werk!

Well, after painting my Friends & Lovers installation for a month straight, I kind of figured I was done for Basel...I even took the week off of werk so I could relax, party and view some amazing shit. But when The Fader hit me up about this Exhibitalia project and said I could paint the hood of a car, I was like HELLLL yeah!

I love old school hot rod art, pinstriping, sign painting, tattoo ish...you know what I mean...those genres share so many people and styles. Anyway, I was siked to do it, but not so siked on live painting. The whole time I was there, they were shooting pics and video, and we had to do interviews and stuff, which made makes me feel weird...I wore sunglasses the entire first session haha. But it was alright since the Fader crew was so rad....

They asked us to be there for four days, and everyone finished way ahead of me. I started to get annoyed and was beyond exhaustion, but I know how my process works (lots of refinement) and that I would finish, but would use every second I had. And I love painting by myself, so I am glad the other artists left haha...except Gustavo...I like him :)

I am super happy with how it came out! I wanted to treat it like a car by highlighting its curves, and using a textile-like pattern. And since i LOVE racing stripes, I made some out of diamond...I wanted it to look like they could fly off of the car when you start driving fast! Annnd I got to bring in some of the new striping elements I have been working on in secret, so all in all, it was great! Thanks Fader and Fiat and everyone who came out!

So, yesterday was the opening of FRIENDS & LOVERS in Bangkok! so exciting! I did the show logo (the blue/pink/yellow lettering) as well as an all over print lettering pattern, which was used to wrap the windows as well as some furniture...SO DOPE! i want that f-ing chair! I havent received a clear shot of my poster, but there will be more pics to come, im sure! anyway, looks like they had a blast and it was a super good turn out...shout outs to all of the other artists invovled...sick work!!! check the flicks...

holy shit...i am so beat. i have been working on this mural every second and am having a fucking blast! i love this shit! but yeah...i am tired and sore, but i am also almost finished with the first chunk of it! annnnd, its just in time for the opening in bangkok tomorrow!

the stuff I am painting on the bldg was originally made as a repeating textile pattern for the thailand show...its been used as like curtains and upholstery over there from what I hear...also, possibly tees and bags...looking forward to pics! freesize is so killing it!

anyway, this is the same lettering from the textile, plus some add ons, so it is nice to be finished with it at the same time as the opening...and i am sooo close to being done. check some process close ups from earlier this week...theyre a little dark because i have been getting there maaad early to squeeze in extra time before i go to work, so deeeaaaaallllll:

Whoooooa what a weekend! lots of hardwork and help from many of my truly incredible friends helped me kick off my Friends & Lovers Basel mural....woooohooo!!! It was, what I like to call: another Jessy Nite production.... because goddamn what a shitshow hahaha! You know, until you have the real dough to back up a project, this is pretty much exactly how it goes...a projector on top of a pile of wood, thats on top of a pile of magazines, thats on top of a tall ladder.

Orrrrr, drawing out letters while under a blanket on top of a 16 foot ladder because there is a street light right where you are trying to project...

Hahaha what a hilarious night! but it all worked out and we got some paint on on the walls today. I will def be grinding it out until the last minute tho...theres still sooo much ahead. But its cool.

i had some of the besssst fwends helping me, while others stopped by to say whats up and some even brought fried chicken and beer. Amazing. And seriously, today was INSANELY beautiful...one of the first cool miami days in almost a year! Does shit REALLY get any better than getting to spend a beautiful day outside with friends, drinking beer, painting type and hanging with your dog? Not really...I AM THE LUCKIEST!!!

Sooo exciting stuff in the world of, well, worlds because I am part of a group show in Bangkok this month! International gigs? Woohoo!

Freesize and Made have put together a very exciting lineup for Friends & Lovers, a poster show that coincides with the Bangkok Design Festival November 20-30. It features artists from alllll over and is meant to inspire and engage Thailand by offering awesome, colorful werk at an affordable price. Which to me, is what this shit is all about! Art is for ERRRYBODY!!!

Anyway, yeah I am pumped...especially because we have worked on extending the show to Art Basel Miami November 30-Dec 5! I will be covering a building with some type pieces inspired by love and friendship, so keep an eye out...install starts this weekend, more details and content to follow :)

Sprinkles Sparkles and Kankles is the work of the vrrrrry special, Jason Jaworski. He is a writer and makes zines/books with found photos and his shit is just really amazing...just go check out his site to see it...I can't really give it a good set up. Annnnyway, I love the books that he makes and wanted to give him something special to add to them, so I made him a wood block. I thought it would be cool because then he can use it however, whenever, wherever he wants! Before I gave it to him, I busted out 10 prints for a special edition...gold on black paper, hand embossed. Even though I am really busy right now, this little project was just for funnnn :) support my buddy

MONTANARO GALLERY

I got in to Rhode Island this afternoon for Measuring + Collecting and spent the whole day just driving around and checking out how beautiful New England is this time of year (I will post more pics from that later on). I spend about four hours just driving around, getting kinda lost, finding cool shit to take pictures of, then finding my way and getting lost all over again. But it was so great that way because i get to see more.

While I was cruising around I was trying to figure out where the gallery was and I saw this barn around the vicinity, and told myself "Oh mannnnn I hope that's it..." Well, wouldnt you know it was. The Montanaro Gallery...such a sick spot...annnd I was greeted by my buddy Andrew Jacob and Michael Montanaro and we just kicked it all afternoon. Juuuuuust what the doctor ordered........

I am so siked for the opening tomorrow....its gonna be a great party and the show is sooooo raaadddddd! Tomorrow I hit Newport with the Mayor for a special Big Ballin Soul Kontrolling tour to remember. For now, here a peek at the space.
